Race and Ethnicity

Ethnicity- the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition.
 


These are two stereotypes of a muslim woman and a hispanic woman. The muslim woman is represented as a belly dancer and the hispanic woman is shown as a pregnant teen with no real life prospects. They are viewed this way in the picture as they show exaggerations of the truth to show the difference.

Stereotype- A fixed idea of what a particular person or group are like.
Archetype- A very typical example of a certain person or thing.
Hegemony- Leadership or dominance, especially by one state or social group over others.

Ethnicity- and ethnic group are the population group whose members identify with each other on the basis of common nationality or shared cultural traditions. 
Significance- Ethnicity connotes shared cultural traits and a shared group history. Some ethnic groups also share linguistic or religious traits, while others share a common group history but not a common language or religion. 

Race- The term refers to the concept of dividing people into populations

Encoding- The encoding of a message is the production of the message. It is a system of coded meanings, and in order to create that, the sender needs to understand how the world is comprehensible to the members of the audience. 
Decoding- The decoding of a message is how an audience member is able to understand, and interpret the message.
